The Library of Government Degree College, Dharamshala is a vital academic support system of the institution, dedicated to nurturing knowledge, research, and intellectual growth among students and faculty. Fully computerized and student-centric, the library blends traditional resources with modern digital facilities to meet contemporary academic needs.
History of the Library
Government Degree College, Dharamshala was established in 1912, making it one of the oldest institutions in Himachal Pradesh.
- Upgraded to Intermediate Level in 1926
- Attained Graduation Status in 1947
- Became the first college in the state to introduce Post- Graduate courses in 1977
As the college expanded academically, the library also evolved into a modern, spacious, and technology-enabled knowledge center. Today, it provides access to an extensive print and digital collection, including INFLIBNET resources, supporting teaching and learning.

The College has a spacious and magnificent library which is completely computerized and it has a total number of 71,375 books on its shelves on various subjects. In the current session, 20 magazines, 3 journals and 12 different newspapers in Hindi and English languages are subscribed for the students. Through software facility INFLIBNET more than 75000 e-journals and books can be accessed. Digital cataloguing of general section is complete. Some rare books were identified and steps were taken to preserve them. More than 200 students visit the library daily. The college library attracts students aspiring for various competitive exams and this library contributes maximum to their success.

- Issue & Return Timing: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Books may be issued for 30 days
- Books can be recalled at the Librarian’s discretion
- Late return attracts a fine
- Lost or damaged books must be replaced or paid for
- Magazines and competitive exam books are for reference only
- Silence and discipline must be maintained

Manuscript & Clipping Section
Preservation of rare materials. The Manuscript Section of the library preserves rare, historical, and special handwritten or unpublished documents. These materials hold academic, cultural, and research value.
The Clipping Section provides organized access to important information collected from newspapers, digital media and other print media.
