BIO-TECHNOLOGY

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies of the 21st century. Biotechnological processes, products and services play a vital role in almost all areas of everyday life-whether it is in modern washing agents, food production or treatment of diabetes. Due to rapid progress in research, Biotechnology is being widely applied in agriculture, medicine and environment. In agriculture, it is applied to increase crop yield; improve taste, texture or appearance of food; reduce dependence on fertilizers& pesticides and increase nutritional qualities. Biotechnology is used to recycle, treat waste and cleanup sites contaminated by industrial activities. Modern Biotechnology is making a great contribution to medicine, both in the diagnosis of diseases and in the development of pharmaceutical products such as synthetic insulin, antibiotics and vaccines for disease therapy. Genetic engineering (Recombinant DNA Technology) has introduced a variety of new techniques for the process of genetic manipulation.
Keeping in view the significance of Biotechnology, Govt. College Dharamshala has started Department of Biotechnology in 2012.
