Government Post Graduate College, Dharamshala, has the distinction of being one of the oldest and premier institutions of higher learning in the state. Since its inception in 1912, the college is committed to equitable access to educational opportunities. Education plays a key function in determining the role played by the youth in the progress of society. A fair and inclusive system that makes the advantages of education available to all is one of the most powerful levers to make society more equitable. Equity in education enhances social cohesion and trust. In order to pursue this vision; the college has always tried to create a conducive atmosphere for girl education which is evidential by the fact that 56 percent of the students are girls in the college. To ensure that the financial constraints do not become a hurdle in the way of meritorious students, they are offered many other scholarships besides government sponsored scholarships. It is worth mentioning that OSA has acted as the backbone of the institution and has played a very prominent role in the growth and development of the college. Around seventeen scholarships are offered by the OSA of the College. Another distinctive feature of the college is the availability of hostel accommodation for girl students from remote tribal areas which facilitates girl students from far flung, inaccessible, tough snowbound tribal areas like Chamba, Pangi, Teesa, Bharmour, Lahaul Spiti and Kinnaur, making the dream of higher education a possible reality for them and giving strength to their wings to soar high. This helps students build relationships with other students and create equitable learning environments that support social, emotional, and academic growth for all students. The world is undergoing a constant change. One can witness the forward movement in terms of qualitative improvements in every sphere including the field of education and learning. The educational institutions are needed to be oriented in a way to bring the ever needed qualitative improvement. In order to achieve this objective, the institution emphasizes on providing quality education to keep the youth abreast of the changing trends in the global scenario. To achieve this purpose, the college offers a huge range of courses such as BBA, MBA, BTech., Bio Technology, BCA, MCA and even courses like Sculpture, Fine Arts, Travel and Tourism apart from other mainstream courses. The College also runs many units like NCC, NSS, Rovers and Rangers and Red Ribbon Club to engage students in extracurricular activities. They encapsulate gender equity by providing equal opportunities to the girl students in these units. NCC also opens new channels for the girl students to join defence services. They are provided substantial opportunities to come together in different academic as well as sports, cultural and other extracurricular activities organized by various societies and clubs of the college which inculcate the spirit of social discipline, requited work and civic accountability. The Department of Physical Education provides various equal opportunities to the students to participate at state and national/ international level. The college has one of the richest libraries by owning some of the vintage and rare books. Living up-to its motto, the college helps to shape the young minds both academically and socially by focusing on the holistic development of its students who would be an asset to the contemporary society.
